Highway safety sign unveiled at Liberty High School

On May 17, a group of commissioners and other elected representatives gathered to unveil new LED safety road signs recently installed near the Highway 60/T Junction, alerting drivers to school buses entering and leaving the highway. As previously reported by Howell County News, safety at this intersection has been a problem for many years. There are approximately 8,000 vehicles travelling this area daily. There are approximately 450 students from Shannon County and approximately 900 students from Howell County who attend the Mountain View-Birch Tree School District.

“With the help of the South Central Ozarks Transportation Advisory Committee and other elected officials, the reconstruction has been voted and placed at the top of the list and in the scope of work for MODOT,” a representative of Herman Kelly’s office said. “It is our duty and responsibility as community leaders to make a joint effort in prioritizing and taking action to create a safer traveling environment for our children and community.”

Until the reconstruction takes place, the signs will be used to make travelers aware that they should use extra caution for students and buses entering, exiting, and crossing the intersection. The LED signs were purchased in a joint effort between the Shannon County Commission and the Howell County Commission.
