Local EAA Chapter Holds Aviation Workshop

The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA Chapter 1218) of Willow Springs held its first Young Eagle’s Workshop on Saturday. Thirty-two local students, from ages 8-17, enjoyed classes in aircraft nomenclature and types, aerodynamics, compass usage, flight instruments, weather basics, aviation communications and traffic patterns, and even had the opportunity to build their own part of a wing, all taught by local club members. The eager future aviators were also given the opportunity to pilot a cutting edge flight simulator, view firsthand the aircraft currently being built by chapter members, and ask questions of numerous area pilots including the crew of Air Evac LifeTeam 1 who flew their helicopter in support of the event, and a young female pilot from Arkansas who purchased her first airplane at the age of 16. Students received a Young Eagle orientation flight over the Willow Springs areas, which qualified them for further Young Eagles programs that assist youth in achieving an FAA private pilot certificate. Lunch was provided to students and families and the cost of the program was free, underwritten by EAA National, their sponsors, including Sporty’s, and the generosity of local chapter members.
Begun in 1999, EAA Chapter 1218 provides member programs and activities that allow members to meet others with a love of aviation in a family-friendly atmosphere.
