More Burglary Charges for Willow Springs Man

Dustin Chaney, 38, of Willow Springs, has been charged with one felony charge of second degree burglary and one misdemeanor charge of stealing less than six weeks after similar charges were filed against him for a string of thefts at Sunshine Village in Willow Springs.

The new charges were filed March 5 and pertain to an incident in late December, when police documents say Chaney was caught with stolen goods while trespassing.

According to court documents, a woman on Lance Lane reported on December 26 that her home had been burglarized while she was away for Christmas. Two plastic totes of clothing and household goods were taken, as well as a duffel bag of children’s toys, and three bottles of prescription seizure medication.

Sergeant Mike Huffman of the Willow Springs Police Department interviewed neighboring residents who had called in a report of a suspicious person on Christmas Day. The neighbors reported seeing a man, known to them to be Dustin Chaney, in their back yard in possession of plastic totes and a duffel bag matching the description of those stolen from the Lance Ln. house. The homeowners called the police, and Officer Ben Bishop responded.

When Officer Bishop arrived on scene, he did not have any knowledge of the burglary, which was not reported by the property owner until the following day. Officer Bishop escorted Chaney from the property.

The neighbors remained in possession of the stolen items Chaney left in their yard, and Sgt. Huffman was able to return them to the property owner without further incident.

Chaney was served with the new charges on March 9 while in custody at Howell County Jail, not only on the previous burglary charges, but also for a failure to appear warrant. The bond on the new charges is $5,000. The suspect pled guilty on March 10, but remains in custody pending the resolution of the matters on which he has been denied bond.
