Mtn. View aldermen hear pool, sewer project updates

The Mountain View City Council met on Tuesday, May 9 with a small agenda.
A topic at the forefront of everyone’s mind was an opening date for the city pool.
The Board of Alderman again discussed the pool rates for the 2023 season as well as the pool budget and a possible opening date. For details on this, see the front page.
The long-anticipated sewer project received good news as Kent Peetz with Horner & Shifrin was present to talk about the grant application for the sewer upgrade. The city applied for a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Peetz informed the board of alderman that they were approved for the grant.
"The bonds are in place already for this project. That's huge," confirmed Peetz. He went on to state that all the board of aldermen needed is a resolution or an ordinance. City Attorney Deedra Nicholson will draw up an ordinance to be voted upon during an upcoming council meeting.
The estimated start date for this project is June 5, and Peetz commented that work would only take two-to-three weeks depending on weather.
In old business, the council heard from Chamber of Commerce Director Tabatha Caplinger. Caplinger informed the aldermen of a recent ribbon cutting at Smokin' Sam's and an impending ceremony for the Honeysuckle Inn as they've undergone some renovations. The Chamber is planning to do a customer appreciation day June 3 after the Aaron Tippin concert that will feature a corn-hole tournament at 11:00 a.m. There will be hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and soda along with giveaways throughout the day.
The upcoming Aaron Tippin concert was next on the agenda. The concert is set for June 2 at the Liberty High School Football Field. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m. with the concert beginning at 5:45 p.m. Aldermen discussed trying to gain more ticket sales by spreading out their advertisement in different cities and counties. They discussed the fees associated with producing the concert.
“We might be lucky to break even,” commented Alderman Murray Anderson.
He went on to insist that, in the future, organizations being recognized needed to be all inclusive of everyone in the community and not just a select few. This will draw more involvement with those organizations in future events.
Before the board entered closed session, they heard from wastewater and golf department supervisors on their budgets. Council approved Wastewater Supervisor Johnny Taber to purchase a mechanical bar screen. The motion was made by Alderman Lindell Vandevort, seconded by Colter with an all-in favor.
A closed session followed in which candidates for Marketing Director were interviewed. The search continues to fill this position, confirmed Mayor John Krasuski. Interim City Clerk Sara Chowning was officially appointed to the position of City Clerk.
