Thanks to the friendly competition among local fire chiefs, Howell County News had the honor of donating $2,000 to the Bears for a Better Christmas program on October 7. The newspaper hosted a water game at last weekend’s Bear City Festival, and the ensuing friendly rivalry increased beyond all expectations the community participation at the booth and overall donations collected. Pictured is Mrs. Sartor's kindergarten class in front of Eleven Point Fire Chief Frank Vanhorn, Tyrone Fire Chief and R-IV School Board member Adam Webb, and Erin Brower representing Bears for a Better Christmas. Not pictured, but every bit as responsible for this generous donation, is Willow Spring Fire Chief Vance Farmer.

Publisher’s note: The idea of this game was simple. I wanted to create a fun way to benefit the communities the newspaper serves, but it was never my intention to do so for publicity. However, a donation of this size would not have been possible without the enthusiastic participation from the community leaders pictured here. To everyone who volunteered, and especially to Frank, Adam, and Vance, I cannot thank you enough for taking my simple idea and turning it into a bigger blessing than I could have imagined.
