Details are not yet determined, but changes are coming to a section of Highway 137/76 in Willow Springs, known locally as the viaduct. Howell County News met with Willow Springs City Administrator Beverly Hicks Friday to separate rumor from fact. At this point, details are undecided and the final form the project will take may not be decided for years.
Replacing the bridge over the railroad tracks is on the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for 2025. Burlington Northern is also a party to the final design. The only movement towards an eventual plan is right-of-way acquisition. Hicks confirms MODOT is approaching landowners.
“They have made contact with some and are negotiating the purchase with landowners,” Hicks said.
Of central concern to this project is the current bridge’s proximity to downtown businesses, historic buildings, and the four-way stop. Hicks said her role in the decision-making process is to protect economic development in Willow Springs – to make sure any businesses that may be affected can make changes that will keep them part of the city’s economy.
As with all MoDOT projects, there will be a period of public commentary. The formal period for the 2025-2029 STIP closes on May 30. Those interested in seeing the program or offering comments can contact MoDOT by email at STIPcomments@modot.mo.gov, by calling customer service at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636), or by mail to Transportation Planning, Program Comments, P.O.
