Cox leaves for Cabool

Assistant football coach Glen Cox will be leaving Willow Springs to take the head coaching position at Cabool. Cox stopped by the news office to remember fondly the work he did with former head coach Travis Payne in the Bear football program.

“Travis Payne brought me to Willow,” he said. “I competed against him at Lamar.”

“I have nine state championship rings and was an assistant coach at Lamar High School for nine years where we turned Lamar from 0-10 in 2007 to a run of seven consecutive state championships from 2011 to 2017, and won state championships in track in 2013 and 2014,” Cox said in a press release.

“I believe in the foundation we were laying at Willow Springs High School. Any time you go through an 0-10 season and still have 35-plus kids playing at the end, that is a reflection of the character of the kids and strength of our leadership, our head coach Travis Payne,” said his release.

“Given time, wins would have happened,” Cox told Howell County News. “Despite everything, we kept it fun for the kids.”

Cox did interview for the then-vacant head coaching job but was not chosen.

“God closes windows, and God opens doors,” he commented.

“I am excited, beyond excited, for this opportunity in Cabool,” Cox said in the release. “I’m bringing the energy which is my trademark … I was attracted to Cabool by the quality and integrity of their administration, and the spirit that was in their school. I feel that Cabool is a school district that cares about teaching kids the value of character and hard work.”
