Lincoln School Project announced last week the inclusion of Lincoln School on the National Register of Historic Places, making it only the seventh site recognized in Howell County. This milestone honors the school's rich history and the transformative journey led by founders Crockett and Tonya Oaks III. This recognition is not only a testament to the school's architectural significance but also a celebration of its vital role in the community.
Crockett and Tonya Oaks III stated, "We are deeply honored that Lincoln School has been recognized on the National Register. This school is more than just a building; it represents hope, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of equality in education. Our mission is to preserve its legacy while inspiring future generations."
The Oaks family acquired Lincoln School on July 28, 2023, and immediately embarked on an ambitious restoration project to revive the historic site. The restoration was completed on January 27, 2024, allowing for the launch of various educational programming aimed at enriching the community.
In November 2024, the construction of a Reflection Plaza commenced, designed to serve as a contemplative space for visitors to honor the school's history and the broader context of civil rights. This plaza is set to be fully completed on May 17, a date of profound significance as it marks the 71st anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling that declared segregation in education unconstitutional.
To commemorate this historic occasion, a dedication ceremony is planned for May 17, inviting community members, educators, and supporters to come together to celebrate the enduring legacy of Lincoln School and its ongoing commitment to inclusivity and education.
