Sales Tax Holiday Weekend is BACK in Howell County

The Howell County Commission recently voted to opt back into the Missouri Back to School Sales Tax Holiday which this year is August 6 through 8. The means at 12:01 a.m. Friday through midnight Sunday, certain back-to-school items are State and County tax free and include, but are not limited to, clothing priced at $100 or less per item, school items priced at $50 or less per item, computer software priced at $350 or less per item. These are a few of the many items for which Howell County or State sales tax will not be collected on during this 3-day period.
Howell County Presiding Commissioner Mark Collins said, “The Commission wanted to show some gratitude toward Howell County residents for their continuing support and give back to them.”
Associate Commissioner Billy Sexton added, “The last 18 months have been challenging for citizens due to the pandemic.”
Howell County first opted out of the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday on October 27, 2003. Associate Commissioner Calvin Wood added, “Online purchases and layaway items qualify for this tax-free weekend also.”
In closing, Mark Collins said “I don’t see this as a big revenue loss for the County, but as encouragement for shoppers to stay and shop local and support their local businesses. This also encourages out-of-county folks to come to Howell County to shop. At some point in the future, if the County sees the need, they can vote to opt back out of the holiday.”
