Upgrades to Electric Lines Prompted Scheduled Power Outage

A scheduled power outage affected about 200 utility customers in Willow Springs on Saturday, April 3.
According to City Administrator Beverly Hicks, the interruption was, “an inevitable event.” Electric department workers shut off power to an entire substation, “...to transfer our overhead electrical service from the sub-station by the new Dollar General to a fully underground service.”
The upgrade could not be performed on live power lines, so the City shut off power to approximately 200 utility customers.
The newly installed underground service will feed into Dollar General, Foster's Auto Body and Somerville Tie Co and will eliminate the congested power poles in that area, Hicks said. An additional benefit to the underground upgrade should include increased protection from storm damage.
The electricity was back on by early afternoon on Saturday.
