West Plains Schools down to top 5 names for mascot

The West Plains School District Board of Education had a preview of the top name suggestions for the Zizzer Mascot during their September 17 meeting. The board also heard building updates, approved bus routes, and a policy update.

The district is down to the top 5 names for the new mascot character. Voting ends on Wednesday, September 25 at 12 pm and the winning name will be announced at the Homecoming football game on Friday. The five choices are: Lightning, Ziz, Bolt, Sparky, and Zippy.

The school board voted to approve the Missouri School Board Association Policy Update, first introduced during the August meeting. This includes criminal background checks for adult students and tuition updates. Crimes that could prevent a potential adult student from attending include dangerous felonies, sexual related crimes, murder, and crimes involving the abuse of a child. A full list is available on the school's website.

The board also approved the bus routes. There are 26 total routes for the district, with the longest routes taking one hour and fifteen minutes. There are nine bus routes that take over an hour, with five of them belonging to South Fork routes and three of those going over 100 miles, according to meeting documents. Matthew Orchard said that if the school goes over that one hour and fifteen-minute threshold, a student could petition the state to go to a different district if that bus route would be shorter.

Serving on the West Plains School District Board of Education are Cindy Tyree, President, Reid Grigsby, Vice President, Sam Riggs ,Brian Mitchell, Christena Coleman, Jodi Purgason, and Shealia Harper.
