The city of West Plains has been awarded $2,620,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to build new housing units to help address the housing shortage caused by the 2017 floods. The city was awarded the funds in two months ago for the Garner Villas Phase II project. This project will be developing homes for residents aged 55 and older.
The primary goal of this project is to provide sustainable, energy-efficient, and universally designed housing to meet the needs of the community, according to the city’s press release. This phase of the project will construct sixteen new two-bedroom units. The release says this project underscores the city's commitment to enhancing the well-being of its residents by focusing on sustainability, accessibility, and aesthetic harmony with the surrounding environment.
"We are thrilled to move forward with the next phase of Garner Villas," said West Plains Mayor Mike Topliff. "These funds will help us address a critical need for housing in our community, especially in light of the continued recovery efforts from the 2017 floods."
The city held a ceremony to celebrate the funding award at the Garner Villas Community Building, located at 2400 Bruce Smith Parkway in West Plains, on October 23. Speaking at this event was CDBG Program Manager Brandon Jenson and West Plains Mayor Mike Topliff.
