WS Native Receives Awards from Springfield Fire Department

A native son of Willow Springs, Tom Shaw, was recently honored with two awards from the Springfield Fire Department. The department, delayed by the coronavirus pandemic, only recently announced its 2020 award recipients. Shaw, a Fire Captain in the department, earned two of the five awards.
He was awarded the Fire Instructor of the Year award and the Fire Chief’s Award for Excellence.
In the nomination for Instructor of the Year, Captain Shaw is described as having a “bottomless pit of knowledge” and “amazing skill to pass that knowledge along to others.” Shaw is described in terms of greatness, brilliance, and professionalism. The nomination concludes, “Tom Shaw is the fire instructor of the century, but since that award does not exist, I think it would be a shame if he did not get fire instructor of the year.”
In Springfield Fire Chief David Pennington’s nomination for the Chief’s Award of Excellence, Captain Shaw is called, “an exemplary leader who embodies the dedication and selfless service of a fire service professional.”
“He is of exceptional character,” the nomination continues, “and consistently performs at a high level. For these reasons, he was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Fire Chiefs Award for excellence.”
Captain Shaw is the son of Dr. Robert and Janet Shaw. He is a member of the Willow Springs High School class of 2005. He began his firefighting career as a volunteer with the Willow Springs Fire Department before attending Ozarks Technical College for Fire Science.
