Senatorial District 33
This week, I presented some important legislation on the floor, both a standalone bill and an amendment.
First, I presented SB 160. This bill would protect student groups in colleges, universities and technical schools from administrative actions meant to limit them due to their beliefs. This bill would effectively prevent school leadership from promoting one group above another due to political, religious or ideological differences. This would not change a student groups need to be approved or receive sponsorship from their school, or protect them from violations of state or federal law. It simply protects a group’s right to exercise their first amendment rights and choose leadership that agrees with their core values. I believe this is vital for our students and helps ensure religious freedoms and freedom of speech on our campuses.
The second piece of legislation, which I presented as an amendment to SB 43, is my SB 590. This bill, also known as Trey’s Law, would clarify state law on NDAs so that they can no longer be used to silence child crime victims. Without NDAs, truth can come to light, and truth is in the interest of public safety. I consider this an urgent matter for all citizens of Missouri, not just the vulnerable.
SB 160 passed by a vote of 23-10, and Trey’s Law was added as an amendment to SB 43 which passed the Senate and is now in the House.
