Why Public Education Matters: A Springtime Reflection from Bear Nation

Is public education still important in our community? I can’t speak for St. Louis, Kansas City, or even Springfield; but in rural Missouri, public education is one of our community’s greatest assets. Every child deserves an education. Missourian, George Washington Carver said, “Education is the key that unlocks the golden door to freedom.” Willow Springs R-IV is here to serve the kids and families of our community. Being a Bear is about getting a quality education, learning how to handle adversity, finding friendships and mentors, and growing into a productive young man or woman. I’ve lived in this community for much of my life. I’ve watched our school and community change and grow. The bond our school has with the community is critical to our continued growth and success. While there are other quality options, public education in Willow Springs is the most accessible path for most families. You trust us with your child and it's a huge responsibility. No matter what background your child comes from, we are committed to meeting them where they’re at and helping them grow. I’ve served this district for over 20 years. Hot topics come and go, but everyone in our community wants the absolute best for our kids.

Spring is an amazing time in Bear Nation! We have kids going everywhere. How important is experiential learning? Yes, we are all about teaching the foundational building blocks of education (reading, writing, and math). But often, it’s the experiences our students have during school that teaches them critical life skills. Plus, they’re hopefully making memories that will help them grow into adulthood. Class field trips are rolling across Missouri. There is a game just about every night of the week. It’s the busy season!

We are celebrating the end of the year! Specifically, the month of April focuses on the Class of 2025. Everything they do will be their last game, last dance, last class, etc. What do you remember about your senior year? I'm a proud member of the WSHS Class of ‘97. It’s probably a bit of a blur, but as an educator, we are bursting with pride as many of our students we’ve watched since kindergarten get ready to walk across the stage to receive their diploma. At WSHS, three events have always signaled the end of the journey for our students. Prom was last Saturday. Zero educational value; but to see our kids dressed in their finest and laughing with friends is priceless. Senior Project Night is April 17. Don’t understand the fuss over Senior Projects at Willow? Come and watch our kids show off their mastery of a topic and creation of a product in a professional setting. Their hard work and pride will “explain” why this process is such a valuable capstone to a student’s educational experience. Yes, it’s hard, but that’s part of what makes it worthwhile! Finally, our commencement ceremony will be Friday, May 2. Friends and family will pack into Munford Gym to watch the symbolic end of childhood. It’s a privilege to guide your son or daughter from preschool to graduation. Our staff is here because we love and believe in our students. Thank you for choosing to be a part of Bear Nation!
