Eagles Ready for Gridiron Action

Ahh…at last, football season is finally upon us. And with that brings dreams of grandeur and what could be for all high school football teams across the area. For the Liberty Eagles, the bar has been raised over the last 20 years. A certain level of success is not only wished for -- but expected.

Back for his second campaign as head coach is Jansen Acklin. His Eagles had a rough start to the 2023 season going 1-3 in its first four games. They pulled things together and rolled off six straight wins before losing to Fair Grove, ending with a 7-4 record. Their coaching staff looks for the team to take a step forward this year. Using a diligent weight room program and competing at several summer camps should boost the team’s competitive edge under the lights this fall.

Leading the Eagles in his first full season as quarterback is senior Gavin Reese. Reese has been a Swiss-army-knife of sorts for the Eagles. He's played virtually every offensive skill position through his career and will be a key cog in the defensive backfield, as well.

Liberty will bring back plenty of talented receivers looking to make plays on Friday nights. Leading the way will be senior Chris Sharr as well as juniors Eddie Rodriguez, Parker Tune, Tytus Jester and Kyle Roberts.  All five will be contributors in the secondary on the defensive side of the ball.

Making a move from offensive line to running back will be Junior Jaren Rutledge. Jaren will use his size and speed to grind out yardage along the trenches this fall. Jaren was also one of the leading tacklers on the team a year ago and will look to continue that effort this season.

Anchoring both sides of the line of scrimmage will be seniors Kenyon Walls, Jeven Blair and juniors Matt Bushong, Tyler Glasscock and Lukas Carl.

The Eagles are hopeful their hard work and off-season dedication will lead to success. Starting things off, the Strafford Indians come to town this Friday night for a battle at “The Nest.”
