Girls Swim enters championship season on a roll

The West Plains girls swim team will enter the last two weeks of the regular season, also known as “championship season,” on a roll after high finishes in the last three meets.

The Lady Zizzers won the Poplar Bluff Dual meet on January 14 by winning 10 of the 11 events. Penelope Autry, Roslyn Fiorino, Gwen Fiorino, and Evie Niesen were all individual event winners. The Lady Zizzers also won all three relay events.

On January 17-18, the girls travelled to northeast Kansas City for a two-day, highly competitive varsity swim meet and placed eleventh out of 26 teams. Roslyn Fiorino brought home the only individual medal with an 8th place in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:01.28. The Lady Zizzers also medaled in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays with fifth and eighth place finishes.

“I mean, it was a lot. It was back-to-back-to-back. I couldn’t really even watch the end of our 200 relay because I was in the very next heat of the 100 back. After that race I just went to the warm-down pool for a couple of laps and it was time for our 400 relay. We ended up going a sub 3:50 and dropping 3 more seconds in that relay which is really good for this point of the season.” said Roslyn Fiorino.

The Poplar Bluff team was able to outscore the Lady Zizzers to win the West Plains Dual meet held in West Plains on January 21. Once again, West Plains showed dominance by winning all three relay events and six of the nine individual events. Audrey Land won the 200 freestyle, Evie Niesen won the 50 free and the 400 free, Roslyn Fiorino won the 100 fly and the 100 breaststroke, and Penelope Autry won the 100 backstroke.

The Lady Zizzers are likely to win the team competition of the Ozark Mountain Conference Championship in Springfield on January 28.
