Lady Zizzer swim season off to surprising start

It was supposed to be a rebuilding year, but the Lady Zizzers Swim team are outperforming expectations.

“Last year was the year. But it looks like this could be a year, too,” said Zizzer head Coach Ryan Smith.

The Lady Zizzers graduated four valuable seniors last year. Most notably, Paige Sheridan was a 3-time All-State swimmer, a 9-time record holder for West Plains High School, and has already gone on to break three records this season on her Division 2 Rockhurst University team. Riley Spurling, and twins Addison and Abigail Peugh were also huge contributors to last season’s historic finishes.

“I feel really great about the season so far. We’ve had four good meets,” said veteran head coach Ryan Smith. “We placed fifth out of 32 teams at a big Kansas City meet last weekend, that’s our highest finish ever at that meet. We placed second at our own home meet, and first place Friday night among Springfield area teams.”

Already all three of the relay teams have State-qualifying consideration times. Both Evie Niesen and Roslyn Fiorino each have six State-qualifying swims in seven possible events. Penelope Autry, a Zizzer junior, already has three.

“Our new swimmers are getting best times and Gwen Fiorino has really stepped up into a big role this season,” said Coach Smith.

Natalie Walker, a freshman, dropped 51 seconds in a 200 freestyle race to finish at 2:41.77 at the at the Winnetonka meet in Kansas City.

The Lady Zizzers will compete next in Springfield, January 4, at the Parkview Valkyrie Invitational meet.
