The Zizzers squeaked by with a 34-27 victory over a pesky Logan-Rogersville team in the District 6 semifinal game last Friday night, November 8.
“We could never put ‘em away,” said Zizzer head coach Joel Wyatt.
The Zizzers jumped to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter on two touchdown passes from quarterback Isaiah Jones to receiver Jacob Moore from 6 yards out and another to Jackson Taylor from 21 yards. In those same twelve minutes of first quarter play, the Zizzer defense forced two turnovers and held the Wildcats to 14 yards of offense.
But in the second quarter the Wildcats scratched back into the game with two touchdowns of their own. West Plains scored on another 45-yard pass play from Jones to Moore. The Zizzers led going into halftime 20-13.
Even though the teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, the Zizzers dominated the clock by controlling the football for 10 of the 12 minutes of game time. The Zizzer defense also blocked another extra point kick to end the third quarter ahead, 27-19.
The Zizzers opened the fourth quarter with a 13-yard rush for a touchdown from running back Jackson Taylor from 13 yards out. With the score at 34-19, the Zizzers unfortunately let up too early and the Wildcats returned a kickoff 92-yards for a touchdown. And scored on a two-point conversion! The Zizzers still led 34-27, but just like that, the Wildcats clawed back into a one possession ball game.
The Zizzers were unable to convert a 4th down and 3 yards to go situation and Logan-Rogersville took over on downs at their own 31 with lots of time on the clock. The Wildcats were on the prowl when Zizzer defensive end Jacob Moore came up with a clutch interception in the endzone.
“I was so excited when I could see the quarterback give him a look. I just scooted over and got the pick, “said Moore.
The Zizzers expertly managed the remaining four minutes and held on to win, 34-27.
The Zizzers will host Bolivar this Friday, November 15 in the District Championship game. “We’ve got a big chip on our shoulder for sure,” said Alex Judd about facing Bolivar again this season. The Liberators were the last team to beat the Zizzers on October 4. It was a rough game for the Zizzers with six turnovers inside the redzone.
“That Bolivar game was a fluke,” said Moore. “We’ll hit it hard in practice this week. We’ll be ready.”
