Zizzer Wrestling at OMC Tournament

The West Plains boys wrestling team is a mostly a scrappy mix of emerging, young talent and a genuine star in senior Colten McGuire.

A couple of weeks ago, McGuire counted his 100th career win. Since then, he has racked up enough wins to make him the winningest Zizzer wrestler in the current era. McGuire has a 38-5 record and grabbed a third-place medal and an All-Conference Honorable Mention award at the Ozark Mountain Conference Championship on February 1.

Of the fourteen possible weight classes, the West Plains boys team had just eight wrestlers, most of them underclassmen, to compete in varsity matches. Xarian Richardson, a junior, wrestling at 120 pounds, and Burk Hopkins, a sophomore, wrestling at 175 pounds, both advanced to the medal round and placed fourth.

JT Judd, Tristan Powell, Eli Ryan, Enric Carbonell Fuste, and Christopher Goodwin also competed in the varsity tournament for the Zizzers.

West Plains sent three boys to the OMC junior varsity tournament on January 31. Trevor Dickson, a freshman wrestling at 165 pounds placed fourth. Cole Marshall and Garrett Whisenant also competed in the junior varsity tournament.

On the girls’ side, Edie Hart, a freshman wrestling at 100 pounds, had the highest finish for the Lady Zizzers. Hart placed second and was All-Conference Second Team. Two girls for the Zizzers placed third and received All-Conference Honorable Mention: Madyson Melvin, at 105 pounds, and Ashley Nix, at 155 pounds. Izzy Smith also competed for the Lady Zizzers.

District competition is next for both teams. The girls wrestling team will travel to Nevada, MO on February 14-15 and the boys compete next in Bolivar on February 21-22.
