Liberty’s First Back to School Kick-off

Parents, students, teachers, businesses and community members came together at the Liberty football field for the Back-To-School kick-off celebrating the beginning of the Mountain View-Birch Tree R-III 2021-2022 school year.
Tuesday’s event featured giveaways including backpacks full of supplies, four Chromebooks, gift cards from Wal-Mart and Signal, a quilt, and a rank of wood. West Plains Bank and Trust Company-Liberty Branch provided a free hot dog dinner. DeDe Conner, owner of The Dragonfly Bed and Breakfast, provided free cotton candy. The school district received over $8,000 dollars in monetary donations and thousands of dollars’ worth of donated supplies for students from the MV-BT communities.
Lanna Tharp, organizer of the kick-off, expressed after the event, “The support from the community was overwhelming. We had about 30 vendors stationed around the track, along with Simmons Bank, Birch Tree Bank, and West Plains Bank set up on the corners.  West Plains Bank was the main sponsor of the event, providing all participants with grilled hotdogs, chips, and water.  Although we didn’t count the participants, we are guessing that we had around 1,500 present for the kick-off.”
Shae Miller, Director of SBU mentioned, “It is an honor to be a part of a community that can pull together and create such a special time for students and families. Especially, given the current state of our world right now.”
“We would like to thank everyone for supporting our district and helping us as we kicked off the 2021-2022 school year,” Tharp added. It was the first year for this event and, with such a successful turnout, she said she hopes to continue each year.
