Breaking records - it's a family thing

The Miller name is well known to any runner in a 100 mile radius of West Plains. The family has an illustrious career of smashing records and claiming titles. Recently, a third Miller has broken the family running record at West Plains High School.

"It's been very cool to see how it has all played out," began Jimmy Miller. "I'm sure very rare as well to see it happen at the same school, with the same record, with a father and sons like this. I'm also not surprised at all because I know how much these boys hate to lose and how hard they work when they set goals for themselves, especially with the brotherhood influences and dynamics in the mix for extra motivation."

Jimmy set the 100-meter dash record at 10.72 in 1997, a record that had been standing since the late 70s/early 80s. "West Plains was known primarily as a cross country and mid to long distance track program, but we have had a few great all-state sprinters since 100 and 4x200 meter school records getting broken multiple times. Many medals were earned in the sprints in the last six years especially," explained Jimmy.

Jimmy's record was broke by Joey Meyer with a time of 10.59 in 2009. That record stood until Jimmy's son, Heston Miller, broke it with a time of 10.56 in 2022. In 2026, Cameron Miller broke that record with a time of 10.48.

"We honestly thought Heston's record time would stand for several years, but we also knew he had brothers coming up who also had some good speed, and had some big goals as well. I'm sure the sibling rivalry fueled some of hat motivation amongst them," Jimmy stated regarding his sons.

Meyer holds the record for the 200 meter with Cameron nearly breaking, just 0.11 off last track season. Lincoln Miller also has a record on the board with his brother, Cameron's, 4x1 relay team from 2025. They broke their big brother Heston's 4x1 relay team record from 2022.

"Every since I started running track, my main goal was to break the school record in the 100," stated Cameron. "From day one, almost nobody believed I could do it. People would laugh when I said that was what I was chasing. Heston was the one who pushed me the hardest. The things he said made me want it even more. Every late night stretching, every extra workout, every hard session was fueled by that. When I finally ran 10.48 and broke the record, the feeling was unreal. Everything I’d worked for, the hours, the sacrifice, the dedication — finally paid off. Breaking that record was one of the biggest reasons I started running track in the first place. Beating my brother’s mark, and knowing my dad had held it before both of us, made it even more special. It felt like I was carrying on a family legacy and, at the same time, starting a new chapter of it."

Between Heston, Cameron, and Lincoln they have been a part of breaking six West Plains High School records. Collectively they have won 15 total Class 4 All-State Medals (top 8 in state) in the sprint events of 100, 200, 4x1, and 4x2 relays.

"We are beyond proud of their work ethic and willingness to work hard and stay so focused and disciplined in their training habits," said Jimmy. "It has been exciting for them to experience those big moments of accomplishments on big stages."
