Demonstration Against Child Trafficking in West Plains

More than three dozen demonstrators took to the streets in West Plains last Saturday to raise awareness for child trafficking, said organizer Jodi Purgason in a phone interview.
“I think it’s a really wonderful thing bringing light on something so terrible. It affects absolutely everyone. If we could just focus on this global issue together, we could really get some stuff done,” Purgason said.
The goal of the demonstration was to raise awareness.
“No matter who you are there’s something you can do,” she said. “You can donate to certain organizations, but I think it starts at home educating your kids, making sure you know who you leave them with. You have to be very careful who your children are around...We are so busy minding our own business, but you need to really pay attention in public.”
Officer John Murrell of the West Plains Police Department agreed in an email that child trafficking or abductions could happen anywhere, but the WPPD has handled zero such cases or incident reports this year. For Purgason, remaining vigilant in public has been the key to avoiding tragedy for her own family and for many young women of her acquaintance.
For those looking to get involved, Purgason says future demonstrations are in the works. Search Facebook for “Walk with us. Stop the traffic. CHILD LIVES MATTER,” for more information.
