On January 23, senior Terrell Gaines, broke Liberty High School's all-time scoring record. The 36-year-old record was previously held by Kevin Irving with 2,119 points. Irving played for the Eagles from 1985-1989, going to the state championship in 1988.
As of the time of this writing, Gaines has scored 2,188 points for the Eagles.
Gaines said he can't remember a time that he wasn't playing basketball and credits his dad for his love of the game. His mom is a teacher, so he was in the school gym every chance he got. He started playing organized basketball in kindergarten and began lessons with Tom Barr in second grade.
After that, he played local AAU teams where he played throughout Missouri and Arkansas. In fifth grade, he began lessons with Rob Yanders at The Basketball Movement in Springfield. He played competitive basketball with Yanders Law, traveling to cities such as Milwaukee, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Dallas.
"It was because of Coach Rob that I committed to play basketball at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee," Gaines said.
In his high school career, Gaines has earned countless honors and acknowledgments including 2023 All-SCA Team his junior season, Battle of the Borders All-Tournament Team, Cabool Holiday Tournament MVP, and Mountain Grove All-Tournament team so far during his senior year as an Eagle.
Gaines showed appreciation for his coaches, teammates, and opponents saying, "Because of basketball, I've met great athletes, made lifelong friends, and worked with influential coaches. I appreciate each and every person that has helped me along the way."
