Mtn. View Garden Club announces the Yard of the Month for June

The Yard of the Month for June has been awarded to Nick and Nancy Heavrin on James Street. When first approaching this home, one of the first things that caught the eye of our judges, Janet Swope and Robi Tanner, is that the entire side yard was all clover. They were excited to see this couple's effort to support the bee population. Nick and Nancy moved to this home just a few years ago so they readily gave their daughter all the credit for the hard work that went into creating these colorful gardens. Over the years they have reduced the size of the gardens to their now more manageable sizes. The yard is neat, well-maintained, and is a delight to walk through. The gardens to the left front are bordered by rock and contain a lovely selection of perennial flowers that include Carnations, Sedum, Asiatic Lilies, Holly Hocks, Russian Sage, Lavender, Azaleas, Canna, Echinacea, Hibiscus and evergreens. A Pink Magnolia tree is further out in the yard. To the right of the house is a Rose Garden that is full of various, fragrant roses. The fenced backyard, that keeps the dogs and grandkids safe, is home to a Redbud tree, Lilac bush, Rose of Sharon bushes and Walnut trees as well as a small vegetable garden. Colorful pots along the back of the garage are filled with bright displays of annual flowers. Between their storage shed and the garage, Nancy is developing a new area under the tree canopy that leads to the side yard that features a delightful bird bath. Purple flowers on tall, slender stalks rise from the many large Hostas that line the outside fence. Thank you Nick and Nancy for showing us your beautiful yard.

The July meeting for the club will be at the Mtn. View Public Library at 1:00 p.m. The Program, led by member Penny Myers, will be "Uncommon Uses for Common Plants". Guests are always welcome.
