Publisher wins international journalism award

Howell County News publisher and owner Amanda Mendez is the winner of the 2023 Golden Quill, awarded by the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors (ISWNE). This international society of journalists seeks to improve the standards of editorial and news writing in community journalism throughout the world. Each year, they give twelve awards for excellence called the Golden Dozen. Of these twelve, there is one top honor called the Golden Quill. This year’s contest had 95 entries from journalists across the globe.
This year, Mendez became the first Missouri woman in history to win a Golden Quill. In the organization’s seventy-year history, there have been 63 Golden Quill winners. Only three of these winners were Missourians. Only nine have been women.
The award is for Mendez’s column “The role of a small-town paper in 2023”, published April 12, 2023.
“Publisher Mendez writes a column reflecting on four years assembling the news and commentary for the weekly Howell County News,” commented judge Ted Barris. “She assesses the difficulty of attempting to provide a news-gathering service for her community while still asking tough questions of its administrators and other decision-makers; she calls it reporting “on hyperlocal news.” Mendez considers herself the eyes and ears of fellow citizens. But she also calls on her readers for feedback, asking, ‘What captures your attention?’ to ensure that she fulfills the role of a proactive small-town paper.”
Mendez traveled to Toronto, Ontario to collect the award and be recognized by ISWNE. Mendez is the President of the Ozark Press Association and a member of the Missouri Bar-Press Commission. She is the winner of the 2023 Tilghman Cloud Memorial Editorial award for weeklies of this class. She is a homeschooling mother of four – ages 8 years to 9 months.
Among this year’s class of Golden Dozen winners are two more members of Ozark Press Association – Dan Wehmer of the Webster County Citizen and Kyle Troutman of the Cassville Democrat were both recognized for their 2023 editorial writing.
