Willow Springs Teen Charged with Assault

Kyle Wood, 18, of Willow Springs has been charged with first degree assault, a felony. The charges stem from a May 2020 incident in which Wood is alleged to have attacked another man and broken his nose.

According to Court documents, Officer Paden Turnbull, formerly of the Willow Springs Police Department, spoke with the victim on May 1 at about 11:00 p.m. at the police station. The man had an obviously swollen nose and dried blood on his face and clothes. He reported the hospital diagnosed him with a broken nose. Officer Turnbull photographed the victim. Later, the officer learned the young man required surgery to repair his injuries.

According to the victim, he was at Snappy Mart in with some friends when Wood arrived, got out of this truck, and hit him in the face. Wood allegedly got in his truck and left immediately afterwards.

The victim’s written statement said he sought medical treatment at Ozarks Medical Center right away. Officer Turnbull collected two witness statements that corroborated the victim’s narrative, which a probable cause statement called an “unprovoked” attack.

Officer Turnbull executed his probable cause statement on May 20, but the Howell County Prosecuting Attorney did not file charges against Wood until October 7. Howell County News was unable to reach Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Weatherman on the question of the four-month delay.

Wood was arrested on October 14 but posted a personal surety bond signed by himself and his parents in the amount of $25,000. He is scheduled to be arraigned before the Honorable R. David Ray on October 28.
