Moment in the Word

Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Today, I was reading the comments of a former student after the tragic, premature death of a friend. Although I did not know the person who passed, yet my heart broke for the bereaved who expressed such a painful sense of loss for an individual that abandoned life long before their natural time.

Acutely feeling the depths of sorrow, I silently prayed, "Father, how did we get here... to this spiritually impoverished place where our beleaguered children are so burdened with despair?"

Shortly, God's answer came, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children."

Today, our young people are indoctrinated with so much social propaganda to guarantee their political correctness, and in response, the Western Church either endorses the secular dogma to gain worldly approval or falls conspicuously silent to avoid drawing attention to passive compliance. But short of emphatically heralding God's Word, we forfeit our ordained priesthood while sacrificing our precious children in the process.

This moral dearth that preys on our youth and overshadows our society stems from a sixty-year alienation from God. Consider the Psalmist David's statement, "For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see (Psalms 36:9)," and in another place, "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. It shows me the way wherein I should go (Psalms 119:105)." Except for divine illumination, our wayward children stumble blindly in the darkness without purpose while we meekly "go along to get along," mutely tolerating their sacrifice like so many marked lambs rather than rekindling the blazing light of God's Holy Word.

Learning from his father's teaching and mistakes, King Solomon said that the "fear of the LORD" and "the instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain; those who accept it avoid the snares of death (Proverbs 13:14, Proverbs 14:27 NLT)." How desperately we require this rejuvenating stream that buoys us away from the treacherous death traps along life's twisting current!

Echoing the words of David and Solomon, Christ promised, "Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them (John 7:38 NIV)." Thus, to counteract today's progressive decline into disillusionment and oblivion, we need "a lot more Jesus and a lot less trivial junk!"

Heavenly Father, renew a vital awareness of our need for Your Son! Do not allow us to forget our priestly duty to Your Word by thoughtlessly languishing in this spiritual malaise while our precious children stray into darkness! Awaken us from this dismal dream and call us to Yourself again, lest we perish in apathy's gloom. Amen
