Still Here to Help: Project Aware Willow Springs

Project Aware wants both those who can help and those who may need help to know the organization is still in operation. The nonprofit, started in 2016, exists to help residents in the Willow Springs School District with unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances, said board member JT Tooley.
“We’ve taken care of funeral bills, surgeries, put roofs on, put in a furnace…,” said Tooley. The group specifically does not help out with utility bills.
Project Aware is designed by local people to help locals with those difficult circumstances in life which sometimes arrive and are out of your control. To raise funds for each case, the group approaches the community to ask for many donors to give what they can.
“We’ll go to a church and ask for 100 donors to give $10...We’ve had people ask if they can give a buck or five bucks before. We have a lot of people who want to give. This is a wonderful community,” he explained, “It's very simple, but we have had tremendous success. People are so willing to give.”
To determine which projects the group will fund, Tooley said the five-member board meets to discuss applications, but mostly they gather to pray and “look for guidance from our Heavenly Father.”
“We pray and get the leading. We don’t always say yes. There’s times we say no. Sometimes it’s a situation where they could have helped themselves.”
To apply, contact Willow Springs City Hall for an application. All applications are completely confidential.
To give, donations are accepted by mail at Project Aware, PO Box 547, Willow Spring 65793.
