Willow Man Dies in Crash Outside Cabool

Deer in the roadway caused a crash that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Willow Springs man last Monday. Ian Smart was pronounced dead at the scene on Highway U 1.5 miles east of Cabool by Texas County Coroner Marie Lasater.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Smart was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Shelman Coen, 18, of Cabool. The two were traveling west at 12:02 a.m. when the Jeep Cherokee struck two deer in the road. The vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway before overturning.
Smart was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, says the report. It is unclear whether the driver was restrained. Coen was taken from the scene of the crash by ambulance for treatment of his minor injuries.
