Willow Springs student is top 10 in statewide contest

An English language learner at Willow Springs Elementary School received top 10 honors in a contest hosted by Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger. Ten-year-old Abigail Novykova was recently honored a top ten recognition and a Lieutenant Governor's Award for American Patriotism. 

 

The contest prompted students to explain why they are proud to be Americans. 

 

“Her deep appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States is rooted in her rich Ukrainian culture, history, and values lovingly passed down through generations. These lasting legacies are etched in her heart, giving her strength, courage, and pride in being an American, while inspiring her writing, ambitions, and dreams for the future. Abigail hopes to one day become a judge, build a loving family, and always care for her mother. She enjoys spending time with her family, painting, playing soccer, and embracing every opportunity to learn and grow,” said her teacher, Shelly Rickard. 

 

Novykova will attend an awards ceremony at the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City, meet Wasinger, and receive her award in June. 

 

“In a time when too many voices seek to divide us and diminish our shared heritage, it’s more important than ever to instill in our children a deep love for America,” said Lieutenant Governor David Wasinger in January release announcing the contest.
