Jackie “Jack” Earl Woods

On September 23, 2020, Jackie “Jack” Earl Woods went to his heavenly home to rejoin his wife, surrounded by his family here on earth. Jack was born on January 8, 1938, son of Ed and Gladys (Balance) Woods at the river in Winona, Missouri, and moved to town when he was a young teenager.

Jack was a graduate of Winona High School, and that is where he met and married his sweetheart, Loretta McDowell.  They were married for a blissful 62 years and welcomed three daughters Twila, Debbie, and Carol.

Jack’s work life began at the early age of 10 and included lots of jobs. From hauling water to working at Hollis garage, to having his own business and towing cars. He was quick to help anyone in need, and everyone was family to him.

Jack loved being in the public eye, whether it was looking over the rocks from the mines with Paul Neal, telling Willie Brewer how to work on his truck, or eating fried fish with Allan Rector. He was happiest with people. Jack started every morning with Jackie Brown, then lined out Michael Haynes for the day, and moved to the chair outside to visit with his best friends, Wayne Norris, Kurt Roberts, and Chink Pulliam. He greeted everyone young and old, with a smile.

He leaves to mourn his daughters, Twila Thompson and Debbie McBride (Mearl) of Winona, MO; grandchildren, Jonathan Mensendick (Emily), Jennifer Scott (Joe), Laura Scott (Johnnie), Katelyn Smith (Chris), Jacob Woods, Robert Thompson (Claire), Tracy Norris, Ricky McBride (Mercedeez), Michelle Marigoni (Blake), and Thomas Atchison (Frannie); great-grandchildren, Keaton and Porter Mensendick, Ryan Lockhart, Huxley Smith, Adrian, Liam, and Tristan Atchison, Canaan and Chevy Johnston, Glen and Joseph Thompson, Lindsay Norris (Eric), Holli Rutledge (Dustin), and Ashley Sites (Anthony); sister, Sherry Woods (Greg); sister-in-law, Alice Woods; nieces Crystal Woods, Stephanie Darden, Tonya Hulbert, and children Kansas, Ivey, Shae, Syndney, Ethan, Tyler, Trenton, Jacob, Destiney, and Mark.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Loretta; his grandparents, Austin and Irene Ballance; his parents, Ed and Gladys Woods; one daughter Carol Atchison; two son-in-laws, Dallas Thompson and Tom Atchison; grandson, Steven Atchison; and two brothers, Tom and Roger “Chud” Woods.

He was loved dearly and will be missed by all that knew him.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2020, at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Winona, Missouri with Pastor Adam Gordon officiating, under the direction of Yarber Mortuary.  Memorial contributions may be made to Winona Schools. Condolences may be expressed at www.yarbermortuary.com.
